Does Focus Mode Actually Save Battery Life on iPhone?

But does Sleep Focus actually save battery overnight, or use more? Our test results were intriguing.
We left an iPhone on the bedside overnight (7 hours) with Sleep Focus enabled on some nights and with no Focus on other nights, then compared the battery drop by morning.
With Sleep Focus enabled, the overnight battery drain was only 2–3%, barely dropping from 100% to ~97% by morning. On nights without Focus, the same phone dropped around 5% overnight under identical conditions.
The improvement comes from Sleep Focus preventing notifications from lighting up the screen or buzzing the phone during the night. It also invokes the “Dim Lock Screen” setting, which keeps the display nearly off.
In one log, our iPhone lost just 1% in the first 3 hours of Sleep Focus because no alerts disturbed it. On a non-Focus night, a flood of late-night messages caused the screen to wake repeatedly, costing 3% in the same period.

Work vs. Personal Focus: Which Drains Battery Faster During the Day?

Work Focus and Personal (custom) Focus modes govern your daytime notifications and apps.
We tested Work Focus mode vs. normal use vs. a Custom Focus to see how each affected battery during a full workday (8 AM – 6 PM). Surprisingly, Work Focus mode offered a small but meaningful advantage.
On a heavy-use day with lots of emails and messages, Work Focus drained about 78% by 6 PM, while the same usage without Focus drained 85%.
The Work Focus was configured to allow only work-related apps and contacts, filtering out social media and other distractions. This meant fewer random notifications, fewer news alerts, and even slightly less screen-on time.
We logged hourly battery percentages across two days. With Work Focus, the phone dropped roughly 8–9% per hour in the morning rush, versus about 10% per hour with no Focus. The gap widened in the afternoon, when the baseline phone had more background refresh and Home & Lock Screen activity showing up in iOS battery settings.
By 6 PM, Work Focus users had ~20% battery left, while no-Focus users were closer to 15%. It’s a minor gain, but repeated over a week of workdays, it adds up.

Can a Custom Focus Mode Extend Battery Life Even More?

If you’re serious about maximizing battery, you can create a Custom Focus mode specifically for power saving – and our test shows it can make a noticeable difference.
We built a “Battery Saver” Focus that not only silenced all but essential notifications, but also used the Focus’s ability to trigger system settings. Thanks to iOS’s Focus Filters and automation, this mode automatically enabled Low Power Mode whenever activated.
The effect on battery was dramatic. On a day using Battery Saver Focus, the iPhone consumed only 65% of its charge in 12 hours, leaving 35% remaining by evening. In comparison, normal use left only ~20% at that point.
This custom Focus combined Do Not Disturb with Apple’s built-in battery-saving tricks: dimmed display, 5G turned off (via Shortcut), Low Power Mode forced on all day, and even Dark Mode. The result was an ultra-frugal profile.

As the table shows, Focus modes consistently used slightly less battery than not using a Focus on the same iOS version.
Do Not Disturb and Work Focus saved 3–7% of battery on average by curbing background drain. Sleep Focus’s effect looked small in absolute terms (a few percent overnight), but it actually halved the idle drain compared to baseline nights.
The star performer was our Custom Battery Saver Focus, which used about 15% less battery than baseline. This big gain came from its aggressive power-saving measures, mainly the use of Low Power Mode.
It’s also interesting that the device on iOS 26 tended to consume a bit less battery across all scenarios. Apple’s latest iOS seems to include efficiency improvements – iOS 26 even introduced a new Adaptive Power Mode to extend battery life. The iPhone 15 on iOS 26 therefore had the best numbers overall.

How We Tested Focus Modes for Battery Life
To ensure reliable results, we followed a structured testing process using multiple devices and tools:
